6) Crystal Fairy [6.5]

A shaggy, boorish young American is traveling through Chile. While searching for a rare hallucinogen-the famed San Pedro cactus-with a trio of Chilean brothers, he invites a mysterious hippie along for the ride, but her free-spirited personality quickly clashes with his self-absorption.

Crystal Fairy succeeds with moments of authenticity that come through the largely improvised dialogue. Though it’s uncertain as to why the group of Chilean youngsters tolerate Jamie (Michael Cera), director Sebastian Silva wisely gives them each an interesting and distinguishable personality that makes for a good group dynamic.

Gaby Hoffmann as the titular Crystal Fairy takes a role that could’ve been one dimensional and gives the free spirited tripper some depth. Once the drug trip begins, Cera steps up and goes outside his usual acting boundaries. There’s no big, explosive scenes here, but Crystal Fairy is enjoyable in its smaller moments.
